Jackson County Habitat for Humanity is a local (Jackson County) affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International; an organization which is dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing worldwide. Habitat for Humanity International began in 1976 in Americus, Georgia by Millard Fuller, Some of its volunteers include Jimmy and Roslyn Carter, Jon Bon Jovi, Harry Connick, Jr., and Tim Allen.
In December 1995, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first Monday in October as World Habitat Day.
Jackson County Habitat for Humanity has completed 5 homes in partnership with local low-income families.
Jackson County Habitat for Humanity operates on the philosophy that shelter is a basic human need, and seeks to make decent housing a matter of conscience.
Jackson County Habitat for Humanity builds houses using donated money, materials and labor and then sells the houses to qualifying low-income families at cost. Habitat then holds the mortgage and charges no interest on the loan. Monthly house payments are recycled into building of more houses. Families must work up to 500 hours of "sweat equity" before they can own a home.
Jackson County Habitat for Humanity welcomes the support of all people regardless of race, creed, or economic status who have a similar interest in eliminating the problem of poverty, housing, and homelessness.
